A week of mixed fortunes.

We experienced all weathers this week with hot sun shine, some cold nights and several days of heavy rain and wind. The lads did well in the circumstances and put together a catch of 56 carp, which is to be commended, albeit that the average weight was perhaps down on what we would normally expect at this time of year. The heavy spawning followed by a very hot summer has possibly been a factor with the carp taking longer than usual to get their heads down and feed in earnest. There can be no doubt that, providing we don’t see another period of extreme heat, the carp will be packing on the pounds in readiness for winter. I have no idea how the big girls are prospering as very few have been showing up in catches so it will be interesting to see how weights are once we settle down to some proper autumn weather.

Individual catches were as follows ….

Tony had 11 fish including a 67lb 8oz common plus fish of 58lb, 55lb, 48lb, 46lb, 46lb, 44lb and 40lb.

Mark had 20 fish with the best trio being 44lb, 42lb and 41lb.

Gavin had 3 fish including a 63lb mirror.

Ian had 6 fish up to 40lb.

Gary had 15 fish including a 59lb, 50lb, 45lb and 43lb.

Total bag of 56 carp broken down as follows…

2 x 60’s.

4 x 50’s.

11 x 40’s.

26 x 30’s.

13 x 20’s and doubles.

One interesting fact is that both Mark and Tony started the week using helicopter rigs which I never feel are sensitive enough for the takes that the bigger girls give. Tony changed early on in the week to a standard bottom rig and proceeded to catch a really good average size of carp whereas Mark (very experienced angler) opted to stay with his helicopter rig and although he caught well the average was very low for us.

Anyway, it was a good week with a cracking group of lads who I look forward to seeing again in future seasons.
