Blame it on the weather !!!

I got back to LMDM last night and much as I enjoyed spending time with my family it was great to be back. When I left the place was still looking rather drab following the severe floods of the previous week so it was really lovely return to see that the tree’s were covered in that fresh blanket of greenery that is only seen in the spring and flowers were out in abundance. Jimmy has completely rebuilt the steps leading up to the lake which look better than ever and the tracks and paths around the lakes are now mostly dry. Good to arrive home to.
The fishing has been a bit below par with firstly the floods and then spawning having an impact on how the fish respond. The week after the flood was one that saw our lowest catch of carp ever although the following week produced over 30 fish including 10 of over 50lb, including and brace of 60’s.
The week concluded today has been rather mixed and once again the weather has played a big part in how things evolved. On arrival the lads were met with temperatures in the high 20’s and the commencement of spawning on both lakes. This continued for several days however then the temperature plummeted from 27c to an overnight temperature of 1c. The onset of a very cold North Easterly wind put a stop to spawning and also put the carp off feeding with any enthusiasm although we still saw 6 x 50lb+ fish included in the catches and everyone caught.
On Poppy’s lake Derek didn’t fish for the first few days due to the spawning but still managed to bank some nice fish up to 63lb, a new personal best for him.
The weather is due to remain cold for the time of year with daytime temperatures not forecast to rise above 14c at best so I am unsure as to how the carp will respond. On one hand the water will be cold but on the other hand the settled conditions may encourage the to concentrate of feeding rather than spawning so we will see.
