The eve of the 2020 season

As I write this blog the sun is shining, the birds are singing and the pike are happily spawning in the margins. With the work party now putting the finishing touches to the preparation of the lake we are looking forward to the new season, however, the Caronavirus outbreak could well scupper all our hopes and dreams for what should be our best ever season. More of that later.

We have removed and cut back a good many tree’s from around the lake this year with the area above the ‘Car Park’ swim in particular being opened up and the Home bank benefiting from a rather severe hair cut. The sheer volume of rain that we have experienced during the winter has ensured that not only the lakes are full to the brim but also the water table is at top level. Hopefully we will avoid the lowered water levels that we saw last year where a dry winter was followed by a drought. With our winter feeding program now coming to an end there are high hopes that the mild winter will have encouraged the fish to feed far more than they would in a colder winter. First indications are that the carp are in fabulous condition and also are at really good weights coming out of winter. Between now and spawning time we can anticipate the big girls putting on another 3-5lb so certainly a new lake record is on the cards. Our first 80lb fish…? Possible but not probable, we shall see.

During the work party Tom, Dave and Chris have fished from later afternoon until early morning and although they have not caught carp in great numbers the quality has been outstanding. Chris has had 3 fish at 52lb 8oz and 25lb common plus a 70lb mirror, Dave has banked mirrors of 18lb and 61lb whilst Tom had 11 carp, mirrors of 14lb, 21lb 8oz, 31lb, 33lb 8oz, 35lb, 45lb, 56lb 8oz, 60lb 8oz, 61lb 8oz plus commons of 18lb 4oz, 33lb.

The smaller fish are all home grown that are coming through from our own spawnings. Not so many that they are a problem but a great addition for the future development of the fishery. Most pleasing of all is that 2 of the 60’s were new to that weight. So, that is now 23 know 60’s in the main lake with lots of last year big 50’s likely to push that figure up. Happy days.

Caronavirus problems and actions.

You will all be aware of the rapid spread of Caronavirus and the impact that it his having on everyday life. We are fortunately in a department where so far there is no notified case of the disease and we would like to keep it that way. With both Lottie (Asthmatic) and myself (Bloody old) in the ‘at risk’ group we have to think not just about our anglers and business but also about the ramifications of us catching the disease. As well as a serious illness that could, worst case scenario, result in mortality we also must consider that should we contract the disease we would have to close the business for at least 4 weeks and possibly a lot longer. With this in mind we will be carrying out our own precautions such as regular deep clean and disinfection of shower facilities, asking all anglers to bring their own hand towels and making the house a no go area. For your part I would ask that you all take every precaution when travelling over. Using the tunnel where possible is a great way to reduce risk, avoid the large service area’s and wear disposable gloves when using a petrol pump. Wash your hands thoroughly each time to return from a public area, etc, etc. Check your travel insurance to ensure you are covered for any eventuality. Say your prayers and good luck.

It is such a shame that with everything on the fishing front looking so exciting that we have to worry about something of this nature. Hopefully all will be well and you all will enjoy a fabulous fishing break at Le Moulin du Mee.

I have been posting lots of updates and pictures on my Facebook page under James Everiss so check that out on a regular basis.

Anyway here are a few pictures from the work party to wet your appetite.
