A most difficult week…..and a new beginning.

Paul Abrahams party finished with a creditable 42 carp for their week topped by a couple of nice 30’s to Steven. The remainder of the fish, however were generally our grown on originals in the teens and early 20’s and it was noticeable that the bigger fish were just not feeding. Last fish, to Jack was a cracking 22lb common which was his pb and well earned to boot. It is difficult to be sure why the better stamp of carp failed to put in an appreance but it does appear that most lakes have been suffering with several long established fisheries reporting there worst week ever (as it was for us). All credit to Paul and his party for persevering in such hot and unproductive conditions.

New anglers this week are regulars Jason Coppard, Scouse Andy and his friend Anthony and first time visitor Tony Luetchford. The first day has been a repeat of the previos week with half a dozen upper teens and just the one 22lb fish but not an hour ago Tony landed a superb 37.25 mirror. It was a cracking fish in mint condition but interestingly exhibiting a small spawning rash on its cheek !! It is possible that some of the bigger fish have either just spawned (lots of crashing in the shallows last week) or are about to. I hope that the slightly cooler weather (just 27c) may encourage a bit more feeding activity and more of the bigger fish will start showing up in the catches. As an aside Tony has had 3 x 2lb rudd and Andy was smashed by a big catfish that he was about to net so things are far from boring. I feel we may be in for a good week…..lets hope so !!!!

  1. Very interesting comments about them possibly still spawning Jim – given that many fish were, or had already done so, when we were there 6 weeks ago then it seems they’ve been at it for a long time! I don’t know what you put in those boilies you feed them, but my missus has taken a sudden interest in the recipe!! Have other lakes experienced something similar, or do you think it’s down to the inconsistent weather and the fish not having really established a pattern yet?

It’s also interesting to hear about those Rudd – my 2lb 11oz clonker wasn’t a complete oddity then! I’m going to bring my float rod next time and try and catch one on purpose, Rudd of that size are rare indeed.

Good luck to everyone this week, I’m getting the feeling that someone is going to have it away in very big style soon – that big 30 is a sign of things to come methinks!

  2. Hi Graham…tell your wife that I will sell her the recipe for a good price…lol

It seems that we have a good head of big rudd here with several 1lb plus coming out on float today.

Carp are fizzing all over the bait at the moment but runs are still few and far between…I think the cooler air of dusk will encourage a bit of serious action.

  3. think my scales must have been broke jim because my 34lb looks much bigger than the 37lb haha

  4. It does look smaller than it freally is Steve, probably because Tony is twice as big as you fellah !!! lol

  5. haha best not let him hear you say that. see he’s fishing sams swim same as me too
